standard strat bridge replacement I'm thinking about replacing/upgrade my MIJ strat's bridge. I'm looking for something that I will fit straight away; no mods or routing needed. I saw a Gotoh replacement bridge that seemed made of good materials and with a nice finish. Would I be right with it, or should I look for something different? Better? JohnC |

Can you describe the bridge on your guitar presently? Is it a vintage style or might it be some kind of locking tremelo? If you can describe the guitar, and supply the first few digits of the serial number, it would help us decide what would be involved in converting to a new bridge. Also, where did you see the bridge you'd like to use? |

>Can you describe the bridge on your guitar presently? Is it a vintage style or might it be some kind of locking tremelo? Yes, it's a vintage style. Six screws. >If you can describe the guitar, and supply the first few digits of the serial number, it would help us decide what would be involved in converting to a new bridge. Made in Japan. H010871. An E stappled with ink and/or pencil on the part of neck resting on the body and on the body as well. Gotho tuners. I think it may be some kind of a '60 RI. >Also, where did you see the bridge you'd like to use? In a shop here where I live, in Europe. JohnC |

My guess is that the vintage style tremelo bridge assemblies supplied with Fender MIJ strats are japanese made, and most likely by Gotoh anyway. The one from AllParts or from StewMac for instance should be a direct replacement. One tip: Measure the distance from #1 to #6 mounting screw on your guitar. Also, measure the spacing between your outer E-strings at the string intonation point on the bridge saddles. Do the same on the new (prospective) bridge assebly. As long as the six mounting screw holes fall into place there won't be any work to installing it. If the string spacing is same or near the same, your strings will fall along the same lines on the fingerboard they do now. The only critical thing is if a string lies too close or too far away from the edge. In the first case, the string will keep falling off the edge on mild bends. The second case, strings too far inward, it may bother certain players with shorter fingers (that's me!). I prefer the vintage setup more than the AmStd or MexStd guitars. YMMV. Hope this helps. |
