Dodge Cleaning Music Man fretboard
Any tips/suggestions? Mine is filthy and is begging to be cleaned, but it's an unfinished board, so I have my concerns on what to use.

Dodge,

I've used, in the past, both lemon oil and olive oil. There has been some recent discussions about why not to use lemon oil so I've switched to olive oil exclusively.

The technique:

1) remove the strings.

2) lightly wipe the fret board w/olive oil (not too much).

3) using wooden toothpicks, dig out the crap around the frets.

4) buff down the fret board.

Why olive oil? Well, seems to me if it came from a tree, it'd be ok to use on wood.

The hazzard? Using too much could saturate the wood and turn rancid. But if you're carefull with the amount used, this won't be a problem.

Please tell me what's up with lemon oil? I've
been using it for a few years on all my rosewood
fret boards.

I have to admit that I missed the first part of this thread so I do not know what has been said previously since it has scrolled away. However, I have an article about wood care for guitars on my web site.

Triple-0 (000) steelwool with a little mineral spirit on it. When your done, use some lemon oil. Major scum can be removed by using single edge razor blades ( held parallel to frets and scraped WITH the grain). Stop when the shavings are wood (!).

(Sharp intake of breath) Razor blades? I'm not sure I trust myself!

Thanks for the info

I always use white spirit. Maybe someone can tell me why I shouldn't, but it's worked fine. I re-oil with linseed/ lemon oil mix after cleaning. Fine wire wool used gently is pretty good for moving stubborn bits of finger.
