FJ, More questions... 1 - does your serial number start with a letter? 2 - please repeat the serial number itself. 3 - is "Made in USA" stamped on the rear of the headstock? 4 - please describe the "Gibson" logo in these area: a) is the "i" joined with the "G"? b) is the "i" dotted? c) are the "b" and "o" continuously solid? d) are the "o" and the "n" linked at the top? Now, if you REALLY want to get into this dating thing, pull the rear cover plate off and inspect the pots for obvious work-week dates or any other kind of numbering. We'll forego measuring the headstock angle for now. Later, DJ |

Hmmm...ok, I'll head back to my reference books. That serial number is kinda whacky. Gibson repeated their serial number sequence from the sixties into the seventies so it's hard to go on serial number alone. That's why I'm asking all these strange questions. One MORE question, is there a volutte(sp?) at the base of the headstock? Meaning, is the neck built-up as reenforcement? BTW - thanks for the picture. The SG is ABSOLUTELY beautiful!!!! Later, DJ |

Frank, Now I'm really confused. My reference books say the serial number is from 1963 through 1965 (Gibson was notorious for goofing with the numbers). The neck with no volute (or heel) says it's pre-1970 OR after late eighties when the volute was removed for a more retro-look. The Gibson logo says around 1972. "Made in USA" stamped into the headstock says 1970 to 1975. I guess to nail this down, you'll have to check the date codes on the volume and tone pots. Are you up to that? When did you buy the SG?
