Disassembly of Schaller tuners
I have a set of chrome Schaller tuners with the Fender logo stamped on the bottom. I'l like to disassemble them for gold plating. Has anyone ever done this? Suggestions, tips, etc, are appreciated!

Are these late model, like from an american standard guitar, with the hidden locating pegs rather than an ear with a screw?

I think the thin aluminum disc cap that's on the back has to be lifted to reach the internals. It's a press fit, and there's rally no way to grab it unless tou use a thin punch, or scribe tip, to get under it. This act will put a mark on the edge of the disc. It may be possible to attach something like a common flathead box nail with super glue to the cap for use as a puller. Crazy glue can be dissolved with acetone.

Can't you just tighten the knob screw, and carefully plug the annulus between the peg and the case with wax, then dip the whole assembly in the electroplating solution?

I guess you work where the gold plating can be done rather cheaply. If not, it may be better to buy a new set of fender shallers already plated, from the custom shop.

Sounds like a bad idea. These die-cast machines are meant to remain sealed for life, the risk of harming their stability/ease of use looks very real to me. Why not buy a set of gold Shallers? Shaller M6 mini , 6-in-line goes for $69,46 at Stew-Mac

The reason I asked Mike M. if the subject tuners were stock Fender, was that they don't have a typical ear off the case for an external mounting screw (for anti-rotation stability). The regular Schallers, like what StewMac sells, have the mounting ear. The Fender version has two pegs projecting from behind the case which set into drillings in the headstock, no external screws. I thought perhaps it may be important to keep the stock look, but in gold.

These Schallers are stock 3+3 Fenders with a "Fender" logo stamped on the bottom, no mounting ears either. I'd like to keep them as original equipment on this Fender Esprit guitar, but in gold finish.
