Re: Beer and Cheap Pot
One other thing to look out for in your boiler, don't let water get into your wax. I was using a Pyrex cereal bowl floating in a pot of water and sometimes water got into the wax. It seems that the water stays below the wax but I'm sure it could cause problems. I need to find another boiler!

That happened to me, too, and I didn't notice it until the wax had resolidified... I'm not sure if the water had mixed in with the parafin, or whether it was on a separate layer underneath. Haven't noticed any problems... yet!

Total Success!!

The squeals are gone! I can now play my Marshall

and Dr. Z and full volume without squeal.

Last night, my ears were ringing!

After a full night of cooling, the D.C. resistances

were still a little off....but the pickups work

great.

So the operation was a success and the patient didn't die... Great!

As for the difference in dc resistance, is it still around 20 ohms (per your earlier post)? I'd seen them read like a 1000 ohms over when they were still hot...

Great thread guys! I have a super nice sounding Holmes PAF that I'm gonna do this to. The only problem is, I think the cover is welded on. I'm not too mechanically inclined. Any clue on how ro remove it? Thanks.

I never took the cover off. Leave the cover on. The wax will penetrate the cover through the various other "holes".

Is the cover welded on, or just soldered on? In the Donald Brosnac book he recommends using a dremel tool to cut through the solder on the typical older (non-vintage) Gibson humbuckers. But the wax should bubble through a bit even with the cover on (to really do it right I think that you ought to completely dissemble the pickups and soak the individual coils, but I've never gone to all of that trouble myself... Much of the microphonics has to do with the cover itself vibrating and not the pole pieces.)
