Joe Barden Standard Strat Pickup
I installed a Joe Barden STRAT STANDARD pickup in the bridge position of my '57 USA Strat Reissue. I feel the original pickup was hotter because when I switch from the stock middle pickup to the Joe Barden bridge pickup, there is a slight drop in volume. This contradicts the statement on Joe's website:

"The S-Style Standard is a variation of the S-Style Deluxe which fits into a stock pickup cover (nothing protrudes through the holes, but the field behind the holes is solid black, so that from a few rows out, the guitar appears stock). This pickup is for players who want to preserve most of the original appearance of their guitar while still getting the benefits of an S-Deluxe. The tone of the S-Standard is quite similar to that of the S-Style Deluxe, with the output and sensitivity slightly less than the Deluxe but considerably greater than a stock pickup (same twin blades, same elimination of any hum or noise)."

Could the pickup be defective? I tried lowering the stock neck and middle pickups and raising the Joe Barden pickup to equal out the volume of the three pickups. The Barden pickup is so close, it is almost touching the strings. Any ideas?

Even if you play it on it's own?

If that happends when you use it with the middle one (position 4 at the selector), and if your Barden p/u is one of those single coil sized humbuckers, maybe it's out of phase with the other p/u...

It's easy to change the conections (only two cables) to correct that.

Sorry if you knew all this allready, or if that isn't the thing.

I just had a "similar" problem with a SD hot rail which I corected that way, but now, I don't get the hum canceling efect when I use the SD hot rail (bridge) along with the stock middle p/u :((

I'm referring to when I use the pickup alone.

Is the pickup wired correctly?

If there are only two connectors you can't really do

something wrong....

Try to remove the cover and see whart happens...

One question: how do they sound?

As far as I know, the wider field of dual blade pickups

doesn't permit too much sparkle!?

It is connected correctly. I spoke with Joe on the phone and he agreed it is connected correctly. It sounds similiar to the other two Fender pickups, a little less volume, but with zero hum!

Barden recommends a 500k volume pot for many of his pickups. What was recommended (installed?) for this model?

I talked to Joe regarding the volume pot. He said it shouldn't make a difference in the apparent volume of the pickups.
