Re: Tele 7-way wiring
The '52 RI pickups are the ones used on that model telecaster. So if you can find that guitar in a store to try out, and you like the sound, then you know those pickups are for you. They do sound authentic. Angela lists them in their Guitar Parts section.

I have a SD Broadcaster in an '80s squier tele (the one with the neck Alnico Pro humbucker and chrome skull knobs)which sounds good. The broadcaster pu sounds a little different than the '52 RI, but both sound excellent. It depends what you decide you prefer. I'd take either one. Unless you can get SD's for near dealer cost, the fender pu from Angela is a better bargain.

I just looked over at the www.angela.com site and found '52 tele pickups for $36 apiece. Are these what you are talking about? (The Antiquities retail for $120 apiece!) Does the bridge pickup come with the copper-clad steel backing plate?

Thanks!

Right. The fender pickup has the copper plated steel bottom plate with the groung wire soldered to it, just like they were made back then.

Antiquities? When you said SD Broadcaster, I assumed you meant the standard catalog version (which is what I have), not the custom version with the wax smoke an dun-aged magnets. It would be a treat to hear a guitar with one of those broadcaster antiquities installed. Unfortunately, that line of pickups is a little too expensive for me to experiment with. It's probably a great sounding pickup. As I recall, I haven't heard any negative comments regarding any of Seymour's antiquity pickups.

I’ve got a Strat PU in the neck position on my Tele and you’re right it is one killer guitar. It has a wide flat finger board. The strings line up with the magnets better than on my narrow 7" radius Strat. I much prefer it to the Strat. All three PU settings sound great. I can get all 7 parallel combinations on the Strat but I only use about 2 of them as I find I want to adjust the amp tone controls differently for positions 2 and 4 on the 5 way. I’d much rather have 3 killer sounds than 7 not so good ones. Also for some reason the tone and vol controls are usable on the Tele. If I turn down from 10 on the Strat it gets muddy even though I have the same value components in both guitars.

Yeah, I used to go for quantity and not quality (like my tele with 21 different combinations for the two multi-tapped pickups... of which maybe 4 or 5 were usable. I spent too much time just trying to avoid the "clinkers".)

So what I recommend is to get some small jumper clips from Radio Shaft and try out the various linkages before you hard wire them in. Figure out on paper if you can get the good ones while scrapping the others. (If there are a few lousy ones that are unavoidable in order to get some good ones, try to design it so that the bad ones are as inaccessible as possible- like with a p-p pot up and maybe a toggle switch in the alternate position.)

P.S. IMHO the Sup'rStrat wiring harness is all killer- no filler! Not a clinker in the 9 combinations...

Fred: I went over and poked around Fender's site for a second to see if I could find a schematic out there. Judging from their guitar FAQ, it looks like they want $5.00 per schematic! Here's the URL:

Maybe some helpful citizen has posted this schematic...? If not, $5...
