Re: strat re-wiring question

Hi
Re: strat re-wiring question
How could I have better things to do with my time? Seriously, one is in a very large barn I and a friend are converting into a studio/video/rehearsal/performance venue, agri-tainment, as it were. That has to be totally re-done. The studio I'm planning here at home will be a new structure, so the wiring will be completely done (we hope) "right" from the ground up (hahaha!). The suggestion is great, you are a sharp guy. But I probably won't be able to do that much of the work myself, hopefully I'll be too busy for the next several months. If I don't travel I can't work, at least not until one of these studios is finished.

Charlie,

I performed the Atchley Strat mod a few months back on my '95 MIJ Strat. It did reduce hum and noise somewhat, but for all the effort expended, I think the reduction was too small.

The idea made perfect sense after I sat and thought about it for a while - he suggests what theorists call a Faraday Cage.

I did the Atcheley thing when I also shielded the cavities with copper foil tape. I'm sure that the copper foil tape helped a whole bunch, and I'm not sure how much the Atcheley mods added to that. But for a strat every little bit helps.

P.S. I spent much more time on the copper foil shielding than I did on the Atcheley wiring.

Hi Steve,

Agreed - anything helps.

I did line the pick up cavities, wiring "trench" and control cavity(sp?) with brass foil and lined the backside of the pick guard with brass foil (which eliminated the static "pop").

So, there are 2 things I didn't do as Atchley recommends: I used brass foil instead of copper and used an electrolytic (20uF @ 450V) for the isolation capacitor.

Opinion?

Yeah, I've been pondering that. Even to the point of buying some REAL 1uF 600V mylar caps.

We'll see if that makes a difference...

The RS has the cap. I think the point about the electrolytic is a really good one. My completed guitar was much quieter.
