Re: Magnet Stagger Hi: I agree with you about Kinman and Fender... perhaps that is why Kinman never did establish a distributor in the US (at least that was the case the last time I checked their site). Mr Kinman may be holding out for an offer he can't refuse from Fender and if he already had ties with another company in the US it might screw up the deal... If and when that happens, just remember, it was first predicted here at AMPAGE! ("Hell, we don't just report the news here— we make it up!") Steve Ahola |

Re: Kinman pickups Just my piece on the Kinmans. I had the luxury of trying a set on an early 90's G&L Legacy (GREAT guitar by the way), the stock pickups were Seymour Duncan's of some description and they sounded pretty good anyway, but the Kinmans sounded much better and were totally silent. I don't know how easy they are to get hold of over in the US, but they are definately worth a close look. Cheers Paul |

| anonymous | A question on the Kinmans: Are they as loud as a vintage single coil? As far as I know his pickups use shorter AlNiCo rod with the same Diameter as the original. That leads to a significent decrease in field strength (maybe compenated slightly by the iron shield) and the magnets can far more easily be demagnetised.... Another issue is that the total inductance must be ~ 2.4 Henry. The coils are shielded against each other an thus mutual inductance is vanishing: each coil has an inductance of 1.2 H. Thus thus induced voltage is reduced drastically..... |

| Hi |
The "AVn" types are designed to be less "loud" than new pickups, to imitate the lower output of older single coils, which seem to lose output quicker than humbuckers. For example, the humbuckers on the '68 L.P. I use are still pretty "loud" in comparison to single-coil strat p.u.s in a guitar half as old, even taking into account the difference in initial output. Stock strat p.u.s ten years old are significantly louder than stock strat p.u.s 15 years old, etc. So the Kinmans in general are designed to mirror that, although he does make one line designed to have the appropriate output of new (but vintage-style) pickups. I have Kinmans in my Strat and I've used Seymour Duncan SSL-1 pickups and these pickups are definately louder than SSL-1's. Also the Kinmans fit a stock Strat without changing the pot values to a value higher than 250K ohms. Other pickups use the higher pot values to achieve more top end. Mark. |

Mark: Which variety of Kinmans did you use and is there a distributor for them in the US yet? Thanks! Steve Ahola |

| anonymous | Hi Mark, SSL-1s are vintage staggered Strat with AlNiCo5 magnets? Which type of Kinmans do you have? Did you compare the volume of the pickups when one of each (Duncan, Kinman) were in the guitar at the same time? What about the sound? |
