To buy (or not to buy) a hacked amp I've been looking for an Ampeg V-4. I found one, but it has an "extra" knob on the front. Seller says it used to be a master volume but the amp has been put back into stock condition. Except for that big knob that now does nothing. Naturally I'm reluctant to buy, although they're not asking much for it ($200). I was thinking there might be some way to plug the hole. Any thoughts? Thanks, Tom |

Tom, I'd put the master vol back in and offer the guy $150.00. Are you using it for guitar or bass? Troy |

Why do you want it? If it's to play and/or modify, who cares about the extra hole. If yoiu are looking for a vintage piece for possible resale, then obviously then doesn't fit the bill. The trannies, chassis, and hardware alone are probably worth $200. Lee |

I'd be getting it to use as a bass amp. I suppose I should just go ahead and get it. I was trying to decide if I was just being too impatient to wait for one that hadn't been chopped up. Tom |

Seen many of these amps ..and they are around the 200 to 250. range. I have seen some in immaculate shape for 250. So it sounds like a good deal. They have little hole plugs.. If you just want an amp to play.. get it and don't worry about the hole. And we all try to bargin,if his first offer is 200. see if he will take 175.Say becasue it has the hole. But be sure the amp is in good working order before you take it ,or you may have to pay to have it fixed. i'd offer him 150 unless there are new tubes in there, and go from there, but 200 isnt a bad price for the amp |

OK Guys, Perhaps I'm just burned out but to look at the prices that folks pay for new Crate, Peavey, Fender, and Marshall junk/shit I can't believe that anyone in their right mind would refuse to buy this amp. Have you looked inside a Blue Voodoo (doodoo) or a Classic 30/et al, a Blues Devil, or that low end Marshall (Richie showed me this, I don't remember the model number)? Thin PC boards, cheap caps, plastic input/all jacks, cheap undersized pots, funky imported tubes, technician's nightmare to services, and blah, blah, blah!!! Hell, what do you all want? Try pricing out the components alone (and you know that I find many problems with this amp - still.....) Sheesh - cheapskates!! GW PS: Someone recently posted that Vibro-Champs - were going for $400 in San Francisco - somehow I would think a 100W amp is worth more than a 5W one. |
