"I had read here that a 5751 is very similar to the 6SL7... but if they are that similar why would Mr. Allesandro use a 6SL7 in his Hounddog Redbone? Just wondering..."

The amplification factors for both are similiar, 70u off of a GE data sheet on the 6SL7. And 78 for the 5751 out of the Audio Designer's Tube Register. I keep hearing that the 6SL7-or octal preamps in general are fuller and sweeter sounding than the 9 pins. Guessing Allesandro was going for all the mojo....

RE: the schematics. Da nada. BTW, you uploaded the 5B3 schematic twice (instead of the layout and the schematic).

RE: jumpering the socket. Yup, this looks like Lupe Lopez wired her up to use either tube. I like the way the amp sounds, so I'm inclined to keep the 6SL7 in there (but will try a 6SC7 for snicks as well). The 5751 has about the same gain, but smaller plates. I don't recall the transconductance right off hand but the big octal preamp tubes sound warmer to me than nine pins.

Dr R,

To give you more options, the 6SU7 is a "selected 6SL7 with Micanol base, low gas and leakage tested for balance ... 6SU7 matching specifications are passed by only about half of productions 6SL7s"

Tube variants:

6SC7 - 1655
6SL7 - 6113
6SU7 - 6188

P.S. Do you want the 5B3 schematic and the schematic I made of my circuit?

Definitely! If you have a scanner maybe you can e-mail them to me.

P.S. As for the mystery cap, my guess is that it is 100pF/1000v. Good luck!
