That's what I was trying to explain to use... a pot instead of the fixed resistor.  
I thought you were going to eliminate the long tail pair PI/driver and use a basic cathodyne driver.  
I shouldn't unbalance anything but just send more of the last preamp's (with gain) signal to ground before the cathodyne driver.
