Re: RI Bluesbreaker mods...
And I must say that the guitar tones on that album are stellar! That one, and the previous one (HTH). -Dave M. (thinking of someday trying KT-66s in my 1987) | |

I always prefered the tones they got on Powerage, High Voltage, and other early albums. They had a more raw sound to them. |

Ian; Is this the same tech that suggests going with carbon comp vs. carbon or metal films? If this is the same tech that made the comment about the rectifier, I think you need to find yourself a new tech! Don't want to sound negative but you will definetly hear a difference between a solid state rectifier and a tube rectifier, even if it's brand new and works flawlessly. The rectifier has internal resistance that will drop voltage the more current you try to push through it. As you start playing harder, especially if you're pushing a lot of bass you'll drop voltage and the signal will compress. This will not occur in a solid state rectifier. As for mods, I'd say to go with what Ray has to offer. I might add that you'd also be well served to change all those 1/4 watt resistors to 1/2 watt metal films and up the plate resistors to 1 watt metals(if they'll fit). If not 1/2 watt metal films will work fine. This will cut the noise down when you up the gain. Won't do a thing for hum though. Regards; Carl Z |

Yes Carl, it's the same guy. He's also just *fixed* my hi-fi amp, funny that the same problems still persist though. Do you reckon a new tube rectifier might be a good idea then? The one that's in there tested okay (410v). ... Ian |

Ian; If the rectifier tests ok and it's not gassy then keep it. They either work perfect or they don't work at all. Carl Z |

So all this "rip out the stock recifier for a NOS one" is bull - right? ... Ian |

| Carl Z |
Ian; It's not completely bull. The new rectifier tubes aren't as robust as the NOS tubes. This basically translates to a shorter lifespan. However, the tone will not be any better or worse. You've got to make the decision as to the tradeoff between price and longevity. New tubes will be substantially cheaper but won't last as long. Carl Z |
