A "good" place for the tranny When you are ready to put the DC supply into the amp for the triodes 1. should you power all of them or just certain ones? 2. should I stay with 6.3 volts or switch to 12? 3.Where is a "good" place to put the transformer so it doesn't create a problem? The amplifier is a Fender Pro Reverb model AA165. Any input would be greatly appreciated. |

I've heard that a good place to mount the extra transformer is on the capacitor cover. You need to see what kind of clearence you have with the speaker magnet. I don't think you want them too close. I've done 6 volts DC to all the preamp tubes and driver with good results. then use the old AC filiment supply for the power tubes where there's hum canceling already. Also it lightens the load of both transformers. converting 6 volts ac to rectified DC will cause a voltage increase. mabe some one will chime in on that discussion Tracy |

OK Mabe I read that Dan Torres book. You guys dump too much crap on that Guy. I know It's written like 1st Grade but I was there once. I guess we know he is an electrical Engineer. So whats so vintage about a cap cover. you could buy a new one for five bucks at smart parts and drill holes in it. by the way there's caps under there. what do you mean you can't get that hand drill inside the amp? So the Guy wants to run a little DC on the preamp tubes. lets discourage him some more |

it's not about the vintage bvalue of that cap cover.... I agree you could get a new replacement to hack up, it' about common sense. If you short out a filter cap, say bye bye to that vintage gz34 rectifier (commanding more anthan $50 these days each!), + say byebye to that power transformer ($100+), it's just not safe |

tracy, take a chill and reread rebels first post. yes he did slam torres a little but so does every one. there is nuthing in his post about not hacking vintage stuff. he's not discourageing him from running a little DC. he simple stated, a simple and good reason not to place it on the cap cover. like possiblity of shorting of the caps, or not a stable platform to mount on, or makes it a hassle when you need to change the caps later. Rebel was giveing good helpful advice and things to think about to make the mod work and be realiable. no where in his post did it say not to do it. Bryan |

sorry Some of that response was to Bruces comment about the vintage cap cover. I guess I just expect common sense about drilling holes in unknown territory. Good point though. When I was fifteen I was building a soapbox derby car with a guy. He drilled a hole from the inside right into his stomach. Daaa>>h As for Torres he deserves a little slamin for dreamin up hack mods sales for vintage Fender Amps! Tracy |
