Thats what i wanted!!! very nice work bruce. thats a 1/2 blind dovetail (i think) which looks the coolest. but through dovetails would of been fine, or anything in the ballpark. I gave him $55 worth of poplar. i guess im going to have to eat the wood costs myself and not pay him and let him keep the wood. does that sound unethical? i think im going to give finger joints a try since that looks easier (i only have 1 router, and changing bits all the time would be hard, right?) thanks for your advice guys p.s. no need to feel bad eric, its the guy who did the poor job's falt |

Rich - I should have mentioned that the finger joints in the pic (see my other post in this thread) were done with a router and a home made jig. There's a write-up of the jig at http://www.adelaide.net.au/~ndolling/fingerjig.htm Lots of luck! Andrew |

Rich: Show him this picture: http://members.optushome.com.au/mcwhirt/andrew/images/fingers.jpg That's a Deluxe Reverb cabinet dine with 1/4" finger joints. The truth is I can't remember if that was glued up in that pic or not. The cabinet stayed together fine with no glue.... 3 hours for what he's done is not an unreasonable amount of time, IMHO. I agree, Andrew, but, he only cut a couple per board, how many more hours to cut them the way Rich wanted? Apparently the work done so far is sloppy. I never charge a client to practice a technique I should already know how to perform well. I would have bought a jig, set it up, on some scrap, cut the joints, and charged a fair price --or sent Rich to someone who would. I still believe it's unethical to do time-consuming hand-work that is unneccesary (and possibly poorly done) and expect to charge more for this "service", unless the client is fully informed. -Eric

Hi Eric, Yeah, I agree with you. What I mean is that if he's saying it took him three hours to cut the boards to size, square them up and cut dovetails in the ends, that's not an unreasonable amount of time. I'm not saying that if he screwed the job up that the client should accept it. Funny how screwing something up completely can take just as long as doing it right, huh? Cheers - Andrew |

Andrew, I know what you meant, and was just adding my take on the ethics of charging for it.
I run into to many in the trades who feel that if they do work, they must be paid --re-doing shoddy work costs extra. -Eric
