Electro-Harmonics 12AX7 Saw an ad in GP for Electo-Harmonix 12AX7s that look like they have standard sized plates, similar to NOS Brit and US 12AX7 tubes. Anyone know about these, where they are made, how they sound? |

They are made for SOVTEK, are SOVTEK and are the 12AX7LPS tubes repackaged. They're not as good as most good NOS tubes but sound pretty decent for a modern 12AX7... better then any other SOVETK 12AX7. I bought a hundred of them earlier this summer and haven't had any problems yet. Bruce |

As Bruce said, they are Sovtek LPS's. I bought a bunch of 'em awhile back, and at first, I hated them, almost as much as WXT's or any other Sovtek 12AX7, but I've gotten used to them now, and they don't sound half bad in some amps. Peter S |

Bruce: The story I heard is that the guy behind Electro-Harmonix also owns Sovtek (hence the repackaging of the old EH stomp boxes in the wooden boxes from Sovtek). So are the EH's a select version of the Sovtek LPS...? --Thanks! Steve Ahola P.S. Everybody seems to be raving about the EH 6V6's... they look just like old tubes from the 50's and 60's! |

Yeah they are the same tube and the same guy. Nope, the exact same tube with a different box and inking according to my salesman at New Sensor. The 6V6EHs are the best new 6V6 I've used but still pale in comparison to cool old RCAs and such. They do look like old NOS tubes. I've used maybe three or four dozen now and had 2 catastrophic failures, a couple go soft and 1 develop grid leak. I'll keep using them over the Chinese tubes. Bruce |

Bruce, I'm running a pair of those EH 6V6's in my dynaQ'ed princeton and they do sound nice. jason |

I agree with Bruce, they are the best currently available 6v6, but nowhere near the quality of Old stock....RCA,Mazda,Phillips,etc. I've used about ten pairs and so far I've only had 3 pairs fail. Much better than the old Sovteks, but there is much room for improvement in reliabilty and tone. I won't use the Chinese ones either. Peter S |
