Build my own amp Can anyone point me in the right direction to website that will teach me the basics and all the rest so that I can have a go at building my own amp? |

We have a number of projects over at AX84.COM which have been built by a lot of different people (which means many of them may have run upon the exact same problems you will run into while building) There is a good chunk of reading material, as well as schematics, audio clips etc... The main prerequisite is a basic soldering technique. Check it out: http://www.ax84.com (or from the mirror link on the main Ampage screen) Check out our discussion forum: http://www.ax84.com/bbs |

John, Go to http://www.ax84.com - there are several good starter projects there (I recommend the P1 for a first project, or the hi-octane version if you want high gain), and lots of help if you run into problems. Read the theory document on the P1 project page, it'll get you started: http://www.firebottle.net/ax84/p1/ax84theory10b.pdf Also, the guys here at Ampage are always willing to help and answer questions. Good luck! Randall Aiken |

Also, if you think the P1 is out of your league, I'm still up for a simple (no frills) single-tube project using the 6bm8 tube. The 6bm8 includes a preamp triode and power pentode in the same bottle. No one has expressed a lot of interest in the project because of the implications of "no frills", but I think it would be a worthwhile beginning project. The P1 was quite a bear for me as a first time project! One tube would not be enough to get much if any distortion out of it, but it would be a bit simpler, and a nice clean design. -Chris |

Maybe a 6BM8 with a MOSFET cathode(source)-follower? (as an option, maybe) |

Thanks everyone for your help! The AX84 site is fantastic. I am still reading the theory document on the P1 project page, but once I have completed that I will start one of the two projects you suggested. The P1 looks like a great design and sounds great, as I have heard on Chris Hurley's web site. I like the idea of a simplified amp to start me off Randall. It's a bit scary seeing those high voltage DC lines, and I am also having a problem trying to find a power supply to meet the requirements of the P1 circuit. Maby the simplified amp will be easier to build and not cost that much? Although I would like to move on to the P1 at a later stage, because of the sound it produced. Any thoughts? |

A small amendment, "I like the idea of a simplified amp to start me off Chris." (Randall) sorry Chris I got you mixed up with Randall. |
