Mesa Dual Rectifier has anyone ever compared the mesa dual rectifier with 6l6's(stock)....to one where someone installed el34's? they make it so "easy" to bias it, i just wonder if anyone has done it. thanks, skott |

To me el34's sound better. But dont just hit the switch and put the tubes in you still need to check the bias for the best tone (the switch gets it in the ballpark). ......Mark ps. check out how off it is when you hit the bold/spungy sw.I think this amp would sound better with out all the extra crap, oooooooo but that would be a SOLDANO. |

| Paul C | Yeah that bias switch is a joke IMHO. They have it set a little on the cold side for the highest B+ setting (bold/ss) then the B+ drops by different amounts with the other combinations of the switches, but the bias voltage stays the same. By the time you get down to "spongy/tube" the tubes are hardly on. They should have put an adjustment for the bias to go along with the settings - but then again R.S. likes to say you shouldn't ever bias his amps - he's got it right to begin with... |

In most amps you hear a pretty substantial difference but you won't hear that much of a difference in the Dual Rec. Don't get me wrong, you will hear a difference but not as much as one might expect to hear. Their power section is pretty anemic (IMO).

my friend has a mesa dual rectifier blue angel, which had both el34's and 6l6's, each power section can be selected alone, or linked, so this makes for easy comparisons. the 6l6's have a smoother tone, much more bluesy with very sweet low mids and bass, while el34's have a much more trebly, harsher sound. dont get me wrong, there isnt a huge huge difference, and they both sound very good... |

Mike, the BA uses EL84 and 6V6 tubes, not EL34 and 6L6. Quite a bit of difference. FWIW, -Dave M. | |
