Re: Mesa Dual Rectifier Back when I had two Dual Rectifier Solo heads (dear god what was I thinking?) I actually did try this. The one I loaded with EL-34's sounded thin and almost harsh (at lower gain settings with the master almost cranked), at higher gain settings, and at louder volumes, with the EL-34s distorting themselves, the amp started to loose definition. I ended up sticking 6550's (added a bias pot) into both, unless it's totally cranked, the 6550's stay pretty transparent and give me the straight sound of the preamp (which is what I prefer in this amp). Ryan; That does actually make good sense! The preamp is so hot that you really need a good "clean" power supply (tubes) that will stay clean (as opposed to EL34 that do break up). Some guys have EL34's in the Dual Recs around here (where I am located) but I modded the power section so it didn't run so anemic. Good call Ryan! Trace |
