Best bias rule of thumb?

Best bias rule of thumb? When using a probe to bias output tubes, what's the best percent of the tube's max plate dissipation at idle to use as a rule of thumb? Bias King seems to go with 50%, Groove Tubes says 60%, & I've recently heard 70%. |

70 has always been safe for me at least. i wouldn't go over that tho. and recently i've been going a bit lower just to be safer and easier on the tubes because it doesn't seem to adversly effect tone. so what i do is drop it down a bit, and if it sounds the same i'll leave it there or even go lower till it affects tone quality, then bring it back up to the last place it sounded good. dale |
