| Ricky | how many of you guys OD pedals? how many of you just plug into amps and play? what kind of OD/dist/fuzz do you use if any? the reason I ask is because I recently built my own amp using the highest quality parts I could find, carbon comps, claro pots, hammond choke and PT, Mojo tweed OT, and Weber AlNiCo speaker. I realized that a lot of the pedals I used previously, TS-9, big muff, compressor and such really gunked up the amp's natural tone and vibe so, I got rid of them. I really missed having a boost/OD option however, so I got a Matchless Dirtbox. This seemed to be the perfect solution, natural tube sounding preamp with true bypass. so, what do you guys use? |

| peter | You bring up a problem that I would say I haven't found an ideal solution to... like you, I have an amp that I like the sound of. So to boost volume for leads I use an EQ pedal. However if the preamp gain on the amp is turned up high to get a distorted sound, boosting the guitar signal into it doesn't make it louder, because there's no headroom. So you need the distortion to be BEFORE the boost. For a while I used a tube screamer, then EQ pedal, but I really prefer the distortion of the amp over the distortion of the screamer. So what I need is possibly an effects loop, or possibly, switchable master volume pots in my amp!! hmmmm. |

| Ricky | well, I play with the amp right on the edge of breakup so I can turn the guitar's volume down and get a clean signal. there's still some headroom though and the dirtbox will boost it, distort itself, and distort the amp. Ricky |

| John Stokes | I basically plug straight into the amp. No stomp boxes. However, I have 6 amps ranging in size from a Princeton Reverb to a Twin. So I pick the amp to fit the size of the room, then just turn up the volume knob on the Strat when it comes time for a lead. Real simplem no fuss no muss. |

I, too, own a bunch of Fender amps of varying sizes. Unfortunately, I often find that even the smallest of the bunch is too loud for the small (but not tiny) club I usually play in, unless I keep the volume at no more than 4 or maybe sometimes 5. Therefore, a good overdrive pedal is essential for allowing me to get the sustain and harmonics I want for playing blues/rock type guitar solos. | |

I like to use two separate amps and an A/B box. I have a cathode biased dual 6V6 type amp for a more distorted, compressed tone and a brown Fender Super (fixed bias 6L6) for the cleaner stuff and switch back and forth. Andrew. |

| gPhonque | A RAT pedal is the only pedal I use. I agree as well - a good cranked amp is probably nicer. RATs don't colour the sound (for me anyway.) Just make your clean sound dirty. g |
