Re: Have I lost my mind?! scott, i had one and gigged with it for about a year. i found it to be an amp that sounds far better at home than it did at a gig. the tonal aspects of the amp that sound so desirable tend to get buried in the mix, leaving you with a very lifeless tone. i went back to a marshall combo and it felt like someone opened the gate and the tone just came rushing out by comparison. this of course is what I hear and my not be your experience. but my belief is that there are certain midrange frequencies that tend to let the tone cut thru the right way in a live situation, and amps that don't have that are likely to sound way different live that in the showroom, and sound very different in different rooms. the crate was one of those for me. i did have a few nites where for whatever reason, be it the room or whatever, the amp sounded good. but those were few and far between. i really think that you'll find the amp to be as my experience with it was, but theres only one way to find out. *S* |

Crate VC......hmmmmmmmm I had one, sold it.Damn!!!!!Did I make a mistake?Maybe, maybe not.I agree that it was good at home but didnt do much live for me either.I also have to bring up the point about this ptp tube snob stuff.I have seen alot of bickering back and forth about pcb's and ptp amps and when I brought the subject up to some techs online that if it wasnt for pcbs how much work would you have?I havent gotten an answer yet.Why is that? The bottom line is we should be thankful WE have choices.Dontcha agree? |

But for $200 can I go wrong? I've had the "Live vs. Home" syndrome before. My research into this dilema yeilded the fact that most(including myself until the last few years) tend to try amps in stores at "home" volumes. Nowadays, one of the first things I do is turn that sucker up. Loud! Hey, if I'm going to spend the money, then I want to see what the amp is going to do at higher volumes. The quest for the ultimate tone continues. |

If it sounds good it sounds good. I know that the SS 25R Fender that I bought used for $100 sounds great in a very small room for a nice SRV or Hendrixy sound. Really does nice things for my Strat. It sounded so nice I went down and checked out some of the bigger Fender SS like the Princeton. They didn't sound as good though IMHO. For comparison in larger venues I use a SFDR or SFTR. jc |

Hi Jack, All that matters is that it sounds good to your ears.Dontcha agree? So many people rag on this amp and that amp these days. But the bottom line is if you like it,that is all that matters.I wouldnt mine finding me a smaller wattage amp the a BFDR,can you beleive I have had club owners tell me that the BFDR is too loud?I just dont get it.Oh well, maybe I should check out the 25R for these clubs and throw a mic in front of it. |

Question...a couple of people here have stated that they've lost tone at higher volumes with the Crate. Does that seems a little backwards to anyone other than me?. Usually I find that once you begin to open a tube amp up volume wise, "tone" begins to really show through. Any thoughts? |
