Fender brownface tonestack...
Hey guys,

Can anyone give me their impressions on the brownface(?) tone stack that uses a tapped 350k treble pot? I have an amp which I'm going to rebuild (not working at the mo) which features these tapped pots in what appears to be a copy of the Fender tonestack. I'm looking at the concert 6G12-A schematic, like this one:

I don't have access to one to listen to, other wise I would! :)

Cheers
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

We've got a 100% stock 1960 Concert (6G12 on tube chart but 6G12A circuit) on the bench at the moment for some minor work.
Now, this thing is by far the best sounding Fender amp I've ever heard. The wide range of tones achievable is phenomenal, even without reverb. It may also have a bit to do with the original P10Q's, but this thing honks like nothing I've heard never the less! I actualy prefer it to the early 60's BF amps (including my BFSR)!
I guess it depends on what sort ot sound you are looking for too. I'm a sucker for surf & jazz clean sounds & for this I beleive there is no better circuit or amp. The presence control adds yet another dimension.
If you need any pics of the internals or anything else to help with your project just let me know,

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the words'o'wisdom.

Actually, you might be familiar with the amp I'm using as a donor here - A Jansen six-35 Bassman. The tonestack looks exactly like the Fender one. The rest of the amp is in pretty sad shape, but lots of salvagable bits in there.

Basically I need quite a range of sounds, but I'm really liking the sound of my would-be-Deluxe Reverb (take a look:
http://homepages.tig.com.au/~mcwhirt/andrew/images/amp.jpg
This amp started as a bare chassis and a cardboard box full of bits....) but it's just not quite enough clean headroom for some songs. And not enough balls for others.

Thanks again - Andrew

G'day Andrew,

I wouldn't call them words'o'wisdom, I just know what I like :-)
I havent seen a Jansen for a couple of years (they're a Kiwi amp from memory arn't they?) so I cant really help out there, although I might have a schematic for it lying around somewhere.
That Deluxe clone looks supurb too, well done. What speaker did you use?
One of my personal projects (if I ever get time that is) in the pipeline is a Blonde/Oxblood Deluxe Reverb - only a few bits to go....
Good luck with Jansen, & if you need anything, let me know.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg,

Yup.

Not too important. I can pretty much see how it would have originally been wired. Aside from the possible re-use of the tone stack, I'm starting over from scratch and just re-using the trannies and chassis.

Weber VST P12Q.

What are you missing? It's a pain bringing it all in, huh?

I'll be sure and look at your wares for the Jansen. (You don't remember me, do you?)

Cheers

Excellent choice! That the model we are using in our 5E3 Deluxe Clones & they sound fantastic!

We had a large order (>$2000USD) in the pipeline from Mojo when the wheels fell off & now have had to re-order from 3 other suppliers (with varying degrees of success)- for some reason no one wanted to ship 150+yds of tolex/tweed/grill cloth to Aust :-)

Yup, sure do :-)
