Modern Marshall opinion request
Anybody that has played both the 6100 30th Anniversary and the TSL please post your preference. Also if the 30th Anniversary with EL 34s vs. 5881s makes a huge difference. I am looking for the Marshall that runs the gamut from decent clean to crunch to high gain and have owned a TSL and liked it but have heard the 6100 may sound better.

Thanks,

Steve

I've played both and worked on both. I do not care for either. They sound very much un-Marshall like to me. They are a built like a tinker toy and are not very road worthy at this point.

yes, to some degree it does. A Marshall isn't a Marshall unless it has EL34's ;-)

If that is what you seek you may very well like the 6100. They are very similar to my ears.

Does this mean that a JTM-45 is not a Marshall?

All it takes is a few cap and resistor value changes in the EL-34 equipped 6100's to get them to sound like a real Marshall. I own a 93 Marshall 6100 with EL-34's, and love it. But I have made a couple minor changes to the preamp circuit.

I tryed out both the 6100 head and both the DSL and the TSL amps....I dig my old one trick pony 73 metal faced 50 watt non-master volume alot more! I got mine from Trace. He does some very cool tweaks to the old Marshalls also.Give him an e mail.John S.

I love my 71 Marshall 50 watter also, but sometimes you need a change of pace. By the way, these early 4 input Marshall amps are far from "one trick ponys", I can get anything from clean to mild overdrive to extreme crunch with mine.

Tonefactor....Actually from my 73 50 watter so can I.Guess you took this very literally! My amp is in fact very versatile with just the twist of the guitar volume....Sorry I mislead you....John S.

A JTM45 is definately a Marshall. I've taken older Bassman and converted them to a JTM-45 (just to see what it would sound like) and it didn't sound like a JTM-45. Mind you I only converted the pre-amp over and the power tubes. I didn't change the filter cap values or the OT.

An amp is the sum of it's parts. If you change one part you can alter the tone of an amp and of course of you change several parts you end up with a totally different tone.

I think Rick E. was talking about this at one time but things like the OT's, cap/resistor values, filter caps, etc, all play into this.

I like the JTM-45 more than the Bassman to be honest but there's plenty of guys who love an old Bassman more! (ha, ha)
