Peavey 5150 anyone
If any amp has the EVH tone surely it must be the Peavey 5150. After all it does have his signature on the front panel.

Oh gosh.. you ever see his rig?.. A wall of these
numbered.. on stage.. then off to the side offstage..
the real amps he plays..the old marshalls,
in a rack. He does use the 5150s..glad I'm not
his tech.. these are about the biggest pain to work
on that I have got into.I bet his tech has a truckload
of preamp tubes... cause it takes good ones
to keep these gain beasts from making noise..
6 gain stages!! And i played a few of these.They don't sound bad..Maybe the best sounding amp
Peavey makes. But way too much gain .. i don't know
where you could get that dialed in to sound good.
And you know there is someone that will crank
the gain.. and put a fuzz pedal in front of it..I go to hear
alot of bands play. And so far the best tones
I have heard are Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani,
And Robin Trower.. The Bogner is a great sounding amp.
I agree with Trace.. the micas are a bit to
bright in a marshall..You can do many things to this amp
some like these amps more than there plexis.I have a
77 2203..and a 66 plexi 1959T.. You can change the feedback circut too to help the amp, along with the tone slope resistor,and coupling caps,The one thing i'd do first
is to put sheilded cables on the inputs.
i like EL34s in a Marshall..Just my preference..

I would evne bet if pretty much anyone of us in here would have actually played thru EVh's rig (my questoin is, WHICH brown sound do you want, the one from VH1, VH2, W & C 1st, Diver Down, 1984, F.U.C.K? Eddies tone varies album by album) so say you played thru the same rig he used for the first album, evne with his guitar, and even had his producer who's ears hapened to be the way tey were when he mixed and mastered that album, you STILL would not have his exact tone... why? because you don't have EVH's fingers playing it, is touch etc...

Hey all;

Personally speaking I do not think the 5150 sounds anything like his tone used to at all. I think it soudns like a camel's butt (ha, ha---couldn't resist)

I agree with Richie when ti comes to the sound of this amp as well as working on it. It's pretty much a SLO-100 with a few changes. When you think about the F>U>C>K> album was done mostly with a SLO and that's when he was working with Peavey on designin his own amp. Hmmmm (ha, ha)

When most people say the "brown sound" they are usually refering to the first album, Van Halen #1. He used the same rig for the first 5 albums but things change as Rebel420 mentioned. Move a microphone a 1/2" and the tone will change radically!

No way
What?

You mean Sir Edward has a wall of 5150s on stage but actually plays through some hidden Marshalls? After all the trouble Peavey went to )-;

You must be kidding

Richie Re: No way YES WAY..
I guess i'll get myself in a mess here.
But you all could have the EVH tone or sound.I
remember him saying he liked Eric Clapton..
But i'd rather have Hendrix or Eric Johnson
tone for me.And Eric uses lots of amps to get a certian sound from clean to dirty.. I see alot like to mod an amp
to what type guitar is used. There are alot
of things that come into play when trying
to acheive a sound or tone.All these add
up to the tone..Guitar,pickups, speakers, strings,
tuning, and your feelings that flow
through all this..will make the sound and tone.
I guess i'm more from the old school
of players..{~}==:::Richie

I play in an original band and a 90's cover band. While I did not grow up or learn to play to 90's tunes they do make me about $300.00 a show, soooo i play them! (ha, ha)

I agree when it comes to the older players actually having to PLAY their instruments! Since I do a ton of studio stuff what I've seen is horrifing!!! Damn near 99% of all the albums that are put out have perfromances edited with Pro Tools (a very powerful editing/recording tool).

There's two ways to look at this. 1.) Players should simply be able to play the parts (I agree and side with this) 2.) Most people edit the performances (me included) because the players do not understand the nuances or how to play "in the pocket." So what do you do?? You can either put the CD out for sale sounding like a yacks-butt or edit it so they sound pretty close to being pro.

PS: For all those Limp Bizkit fans out there, have you heard Fred sing live??? He's very conistant at singing flat all the time but in the studio he's right on the money! Remember that song "with a little help from my friends?" In this case it was "I get by with a little help from "Auto-Tune" (A Pro Tools plug in that corrects pitch)

PPS: The Line 6 unit called the POD came from the popular Pro Tools plug in called "Amp Farm."
