Marshall I.D. Help
Hi folks,

I have a Marshall 100 watt Super Lead head sitting on the bench that the original owner swears that he bought in 1962.

I didn't think they made the Super Lead that early?

It is a four input model with Brimar preamp tubes. The filter caps are 'Erie" brand and are blue in color. There is a large white sticker on the inside edge of the chassis that says "This amp has been fitted with Avalance diodes in the H.T. circuit",etc.

There are no dates on the chassis anywhere to determine the exact year. Any thoughts anyone?

Also the power transformer has a loud hum, mechanical I believe. Would the suggestion be to replace the transformer or live with the hum?

Thanks,
Tim C.

Sounds like you have a true PLEXI.... let me ask you a few questions... 1) is the front panel made out of plexi or aluminum 2) is the power tranzformer laying down, or standing up like the output transformer, 3) on the lower left of the back panel, there should be a serial number... that will give the best clue to the REAL age also 4) is it a fiberglass board with turrets and handwired or a printed circuit?? All these will help date it (and is the logo on the front the large or the small script)

Rebel,

The front logo is small white letters.

The power transformer is standing up like the OT transformer. The OT transformer has large black letters on top that say OT100M. It is a turret board style with components wound around the lugs and soldered. The power cord is only two conductor. The impedence selector is a turn type switch.

The front panel sure looks like metal to me.

The serial number is SL/A 4006A.

Thanks,
Tim C.

Hi Tim,

Let me say I'm no Marshall expert, but...I don't think the amp could possibly be that old.

I believe Marshall first started building amps in 1962 and at that time they were all 50 watters.

Also, the original nameplates were silver metal "blocks" with the Marshall lettering in red. The later block logos were larger, gold, and the lettering was black. I don't think the script came in until 1965 or so.

Hopefully Trace or Speedracer can shed some more light on the situation.

Well it's NOT a plexi, and it is a bit newr than 1962. the
SL/A means it is a Super LEad model, /A means 100 watts, no tremolo etc.
the A at the end gives the date, and IIRC i think yours is a 1970 model i'll check at home, or if anyone has the Groove Tubes Book, there is a seciton before the marshall amps that will interpret it *grumbles*

It's a 69. Marshall never built any Super Leads until around 66. And the first ones used dual 50 watt output transformers.
