Actually, the screen voltage on those amps is not bad -- it's about half the plate voltage. So you might have around 700 volts on the plates, but only 350 volts on the screens. |

Jim is correct about the screen Voltages, they run 1/2 of the plate voltage, which is in the 720V range. I would probably go with the Svetlana EL-34's. I've used them with good results in the MM amps. I also put Sovtec 5881's in an HD-130 once at the customer's request. He supplied the tubes and told me that a tech. friend of his had suggested he try them. They worked great. I've replaced 7027's in Ampeg amps with the Sov. 5881 also. I would probably try the new Sov. 6L6WXT+ if I was going to go that route. They have better (higher) output in the hi-mids than the 5881. I have a solid state driver version of the HD130-410 amp. I was going to change it to the tube driver until I compared it to a tube driver amp. Mine sounded warmer; ie better bass response, and neither amp sounded very good in the MV distortion mode. Moral - Don't believe everything you read, trust your ears!. RE |
