Re: Tubes for MusicMan
I think rebel has the right idea on the
Music man amps. Some had 6L6 tubes and
still high plate voltages.. Like around 700v
But as Rebel poated the tube is made to run
different in these amps. Since these amps
are more your Fender type amp. I'd stay with
the big bottle tube...Most i have seen of these
came with Big bottle 6CA7s. or 6L6 tubes.
I read some where of depending on the tube type used
should run 7.5ma bias or somewhere about there about,
Could be wrong.. but i know it was low .

The schematics state 500mv across the cathode resistor, which is a 10ohm resistor, and figuring @700v on the plates, I worked that out to be 25mA. I knwo the Svet's may sound better cranked, but i'm goign for that fender tone (just to help my dad get rid of the amp, AFTER I get my Mullards), I am leaning to the Ruby str-el34B (not the softer A models), which Lord Valve has claimed to be the best Sylvania big-bottle 6cA7 clone out yet, and recommended for Music Man's... if I was keeping the amp myself, or I even knew he would keep it, it may be a differnt story, I jsut want to help him get rid of it, and get my mullards!!

Reb,

While this is the "best" MM version - with the tube driver/PI, it is still basically a solid state amp with a tube output section. If you'll look, the PI is a spit load type ("cathodyne") and not the Fender cathode coupled type (which is credited with much of the "Fender" sound) - it also has "cold" biased output tubes. Use the tubes you wish but no type variant will make this amp sound like a Fender - it's still a Music Man.

Your right GW, they don't sound like a Fender,But Leo was
part of the Musicman thing.I had a few of these,but they
weren't what I liked, so I sold mine.I had the HD 150
Like the size of a twin, but REAL heavy.
The sound was to brittle for me.Lets say they were
supposed to be or sound like fender..But sound
like a musicman.{~}==::: Richie

But the story is that Leo had NOTHING to do with the amp line, only guitars.At least that's what I keep reading.Jim

ACTUALLY, I had an hd130, the one with the ss PI, and it sounded fendery enough to fool most untrained... EL34's in general are more 'sterile' sounding while clean, and ooh so sweet when they get dirty. 6l6s are a bit more musical when clean. Like I said, I'm ont trying to keep the amp, but I think a 6ca7 would sound a bit more round and musical than something than a el34wxt etc.

Jim: I didn't say he he did.. I said he was part of the
Musicman thing..I've read that too..
but they sure look like Fenders,even a 4x10
musicman amp...hmmmm..I do know Johnny winter
still uses them... Richie{~}==:::
