Another "what is it?" Tube Question A friend of mine who used to work for GTE found a box of tubes the company no longer wanted. (He worked for a department of GTE that calibrated test equipment for other companies). Among them were some Amperex 12AX7/ECC83 tubes. They are in yellow and green boxes with the wording 'A North American Philips Company' The tubes themselves have written on them 'made in Great Britain' There is a logo of a world map on the tubes too. Did Philips have a factory in Great Britain? They sound pretty decent in the few amps we have tried them in. Just curious if anyone is familiar with these tubes. Thanks! |

Joe: Sounds like a very nice score of Phillips/amperex/mullard tubes... Some of the old test equipment had the good fortune of having the most coveted tubes of today used in them.... Marc |

Marc, Are these of Mullard manufacture? Was Mullard part of Philips? I really know very little about tube companies so any information is appreciated. Thanks again! |

Joe: So I have heard. There are many out ther and here who could give you better, more accurate info on the petigree of those tubes. Ned @ triode Electronics comes to mind, and has been known to haunt this board. I believe mullard and amperex were a merged company by the end of the 60's, maybe sooner or always? Anybody want volunteer a short history primer? Marc |

Mullard was a part of Philips for years. Philips also owned other tube companies in Europe, someone made up a list of them and posted it on RAT..Valvo, Dario, and Lorenz come to mind. Amperex was a Philips subsidiary that made transmitter tubes in the USA and imported/distributed tubes from Philips & various subsidiaries.Amperex tubes could be had in Europe under their source brand names. Philips sold the Amperex & Mullard brand names to Richardson Electronics. |

Tell me about it Tell me about it! At the university where my old man lectures there is an antique polygraph machine lying in one of the storerooms. There are about 30 Telefunken 12AX7s sticking out the back! They won't let me have it for scrap Steve C. |

Have you offered to retube it with fresh new Sovteks, free of charge?? (including hauling away the old, worn out tubes, of course.) |
