To Sovtek or not to Sovetek? 6V6 is the question! I have two 6v6 type amps to retube, a Fender Tweed Deluxe and a Groove Tubes STP-G. The Deluxe deserves NOS holy grail type tubes but I'm just a po' boy. I hate all the hype/prices in the NOS game. Even with Chineese Rubys the Tweed sings sweeter than most anything. How does the new Sovtek GT6V6 stack up in comparison to NOS Phillips etc? |

Try a pair of the new SOVTEK 6V6EHs. They sound very good and are a decent price too. Bruce |

| Carl B. | Bruce, any word on how those are standing up to the Deluxe Reverb plate/screen volts? I've only one set of old RCAs that seem to test decent. Is the word out that the EH's are up to the DR abuse? Thanks, - Carl B. |

| John Stokes | No problem with the new Sovtek 6V6EH in a Deluxe Reverb. Been there, done that. I would recommend changing the 470 ohm screen resistors to 1k @ 2W though, just as a precautionary measure. This tube is safe in a DR. However, IMO they are still not as robust or good sounding as a NOS. Those currently available JAN Philips 6V6GTs are hard to beat on tone and value. They sound good, last a loooooooong time and the price is not outrageous. On the other hand, the price on the 6V6EH is LOW, they sound decent, and they live in a DR. I believe the Philips may put out a bit more power than the Sovtek, but I don't have hard data on that. Bottom line, is as long as the Philips is available at sane prices, I'd stick with them. Once the price gets crazy, the Sovtek EH will be the tube of choice. |

| Carl B. | Much Grass! (That is the translation of "muchos gracias," right? {g}) Is it more of a power or a flash-over issue with the screens, regarding that upped screen-resistor value? (I suppose with the 315Vdc max as spec'd, it's probably an internal flash-over issue.) Still, if nothing else, they should help to keep the price sane on the Jan Philips 6V6GT. Look what happened to the overblown GE 6550A prices when Svet came in with a solid 6550, etc., etc., etc. - Carl B. |

| John Stokes | It's a power dissipation issue. Raising the resistor increases the effective screen supply impedance. There probably won't be a flash-over issue unless the tube's vacuum is shitty or unless you way the hell overvoltage it. |

I had a Tweed Deluxe in for a power trans replacement (a 5C3). I had just received the 6V6EHs so thought I'd try them out. I switched them for the RCA 6V6GTAs that I had put in the amp a few months ago and I thought they sounded "sweeter". I A/B'd them a few times and decided to leave the EHs in there. The owner's a friend and I'm anxious to see if he notices a difference. For around $6 a pop I was pleasantly surprised. (I also tried the JAN Phillips but they came in third) Tom Lennon |
