Re: metal film resistors over carbon comp ?
Thanx for being the first to giive me a straight answer back a few posts as to the tone and the reliablity. (Cracking open my 1971Marshall SL gave me the answer as well -- i didnt wnat something tha twoudl burn out in a week)
NOW, my turn to back you up. RatShak parts: I currently waiting on placing a few large orders thru mouser/allied etc, but I have an amp project that I want to get done tonite. Yes, I know I'm going to pay more for the 2 resistors I need at ratshack than i'll pay for 100 thru mouser etc, b8ut it is convenience. for $5 at rat shack, I'll have a rebuild done that's been on the bench for far too long, and I'll be enjoying the $#!+ out of my amp, while the rest of my mouser order is waiting to be shipped.

I honestly do not hear enough difference between the two to say that one is brighter or darker than the other. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "by those who should know better". Many things of this nature come down to personal taste and opinion.

I do prefer metal film resistors myself. They usually are a great choice when it comes to changing out the plate resistors in a Fender amp as it helps to get rid of the "hiss". When I build my own amps I use metal film as well.

Happy amping!

Wild Bill

I was selling resistors when films first hit the market! the reason metal films appeared was for tolerances better than the std 5% - it just wasn't practical with carbon.
Still, I agree with Albert. If a customer wants crackle and pop with poor reliability in his amp then if he's willing to pay then give it to him. Just warn him that he can't expect to have it both ways and get a guarantee that nothing will go wrong...

The unsung hero of resistors
Mouser sells a xicon 1W carbon film resistor that is small in size and rated at 500V. Check the ratings for other 1W resistors - they're all 350V. These resistors are great for plate loads and they're cheap. Low noise, sound great. Also, it is my understanding the xicon is a rebrander, not a manufacturer, so I guess you never know... Bill R.

I'll second that
I won't argue that different types of components can sound different. But to me, these differences are swamped by the differences in day-to-day line voltages, temperature, humidity, and the rather termperamental nature of tubes themselves. The human hearing system varies all over the place in regards to frequency response.

The Xicon stuff provides an excellent price/performance ratio. I use their polyprop caps as well as carbon film resistors.
