Tube recommendations for a Studio Caliber I just picked up a used Mesa/Boogie Studio Caliber that I'm very happy with. Since I don't know how old the tubes are and I'm going to be gigging with this amp I want to replace the tubes and keep the ones that are in there now as back ups. It uses 6 12AX7s and 2 EL84s. Anyone have some recomendations or know a good site with some side-by-side comparison notes? We play a pretty wide range of music but I guess a mix of classic rock and newer "alternative" would be the best discription. thanks |

I actually have the same amp and use it regularly on gigs. I've been using Groove Tubes for both power and preamp. Mesa has a preamp tube that might inerest you if you've had any problems with feedback. It's called the SPAX7 and is a 12AX7 with a rubber thingy on it to stop ringing. Generally happens if you have the gain crancked ! (it replaces the first preamp tube ) The GT Power Tubes are a matched set and rated from 1-10: 1 - 3 Early distortion (wider range of distortion) 4 - 7 Normal distortion 8 -10 Late distortion (more clean power/ headroom) Anywayz.....these work fo me...... You should mention the nominal biasrating he should use with Groove Tubes #5, #6 or #7 for the fixed bias of the Boogie's powersection for normal functioning.. Andy |

I have the same amp, and I really like the ei/yugo 12ax7's, although I'm not sure if you can still get them... I used to use sovtek 12ax7's, but the ei's were better. As a side note, my amp came with the spax7 tubes, and the rubber band thing did nothing to solve the oscillation at really hi gain problem. I've got a set of groove tubes el84's #5 in the amp now, but I would probably buy a set of sovtek el84-m tubes instead from Ned at triodeel.com. |
