The old HI FI is the way to go. I was over at an older woman's house the other day and came across an HH Scott 99D that her husband hardly ever used. It has 3 damn near new Telefunken 12AX7's from 1959 as well as others. I tried the tele's and they sound rather nice in my guitar amps as do the HH Scott labelled 6L6GB's. All for free!

Another good source at hamfests or swap meets are old tube type test equipment. Bought a Lamda HV power supply stuffed with Telefunken 12AX7's, replaced them with cheap Chinese 12AX7's and had both the power supply and the Telefunkens. Also found an old o'scope module with about eight 6CW4 Nuvistors, paid $5 for it.

Tweeds originally came with RCA's and that's what I use in mine. The RCA blackplates and "real" RCA 7025's are the best of that line when you can find them. Smooth & quiet.

Mullard is also a great 12AX7 and they'll last FOREVER compared to most others. But they have a different tone than the RCA's. "Trust your ears" when it comes to deciding what's "best".

I agree...I like the old RCA's alot...they seem bigger and brighter to me than GE's, which are also a favorite of mine. I also like old Tung Sol's if they're fresh. Don't like any Phillips 12ax7. Mullards sound great in an old Marshall...they seem to thicken up the tone and eliminate the glassy, ear-piercing brightness some Marshalls have. In a Fender, the Mullards seem a little dark sounding tho and seem to have less high end to my ears. I haven't heard ANY new 12ax7 that I love...tho the Ruby 12ax7/7025str that was discontinued last year was my favorite. Lew

the loudest and fattest combo I've found for my homebrew 5E3's are... NOS GE for 1st stage ... Sylvania long plate for 2nd ... the other 5E3 has Telefunken "flat-plate" 1st stage and Telefunken "ribbed-plate" for 2nd stage...the Tele's incidentally were also pulled out of an HH- Scott amp. I spent nearly 2 HRS. swapping IN/OUT these multitudes of pre-amp tubes that I have here!...Sovteks, Mullards, Magnavox, Raytheon, Zenith, etc , etc... the ones I've listed above were my final choices for these particular amps...Frank.
