2-channel Champ: suggestions? I'm building a simple Champ for use around the house. Love the tone at max volume of these little amps. However, I'm wondering if I can make it a little more versitile by adding a 2nd preamp channel. There's plenty of room in the chassis. Anyone have any suggestions for the 2nd channel? Thanks a lot, Ed |

One nice thing to try is make one channel "blackface," with treble and bass controls and cathode bypass caps on both halves of the 12AX7, and the other channel "tweed," with only one bypassed cathode and no tone controls. This lets you go from "scooped-mid blackface clean" to "tweed grind" with just a spdt sw. Or run the guitar signal into both at the same time and blend with the volumes. Just build the power amp section as normal, then feed each preamp in separate thru a 220K series resistor. Super easy, plus it sounds great. Farrow http://surf.to/pharaohamps |

If you want to start simple, try adding a footswitchable boost function (the one used on Steve A.'s dumble-ized normal channel works great). It'll let you go from relatively clean to a nice overdrive (sans tone controls) in the blink of an eye. It's a cinch to add in and adds a lot of versatility. You might also want to add a switch that disconnects the NFB. I've fooled with my champ's NFB loop quite a bit and I've found that I prefer it disconnected. MJ |
