| Psycho Bass Guy | Traynor Bass Speakers (THIS IS VERY STRANGE!!) File this one under too weird to explain. Awhile back, someone else asked a question about using Traynors for bass and I told them that the stock cabs had no bottom. Well, and this is the VERY strange, it didn't at the time, but now my cab does. Signal generator confirms it, too. Before, through the same amp, same speaker cable, same cable from the generator, and same generator the cab did not respond below 50Hz. Now, it responds down to 35 Hz. It is a stock Traynor 2x15(8 ohm) with the only thing of note being that there are no dustcaps on the speakers. (I was going to put some on, just haven't had time.) The grillecloth is perfect with no tears so nothing is getting in the speakers. The only thing I can think of is that I used that Trace Elliot VR400(to test volume) through it and it somehow made it come alive. How, I don't know, but through my Traynor head now, I get bass like I never have out of this rig. I have in no way modified either my Traynor head or cabinet, and this is no joke! (BTW it's not that the head suddenly started putting more power out either, I had been using it with another cab because of the lack of bottom from the 2x15. The amp is in perfect working order with the same set of tubes it had before.) What is going on?!! Psycho |

Hi Psycho, Have you moved the cabinet between tests? Bass response can vary dramatically depending on where it is in the room, what size of room it's in, etc. For instance my little Peavey 2x10 gives masses of bass at home, but hardly any in our jamming room ;( Putting the cab in a corner of the room often helps boost the bass. Steve. |

| Psycho Bass Guy | Forgot to mention that; it's in exactly the same place in the same room. Everything is identical to the way it was the first time I tested it, it's just acting different. Psycho |

| Psycho Bass Guy | It was Charlotte? Something just occurred to me: The cabinet was stored outside in a barn for years before I bought it and cleaned it up. Even though I cleaned out everything, I never checked inside the speakers. The dustcaps are gone and it was clearly clean inside the cab so I just checked it to see if it worked and both speakers fired. Could something have gotten into the coil and acted as a resistor? I also forgot to mention that the cab is much louder now, too. I'll bet there was spider web inside both the voice coils that didn't get burned out until I put way more power through it than it was used to. That sound too far-fetched? I hope not, because today that is as close to sanity as I can get. Psycho |

Maybe the voice coil former was slightly swollen from moisture? Or the gap between was just plain dirty inside and the coil was suffering from stiction. Maybe Ted Weber would have a thought. Bruce |

| Psycho Bass Guy | Bruce, Weber, and thoughts anonymous smartass postings. Wow, let's crack on my instrument and and my ears. I guess that SPL meter didn't have anything to say about the cabinet's response. SPL at 1 meter approximately 100 watts is now 110db for a 1khz tone, for a 40Hz tone it is now 96 db and down at 35Hz it is 59 db. Before, the clear dropoff point was 50Hz with a 65db, but I guess a bass player would know things like that. (I write this stuff down so my small brain won't be taxed by it.) I never mentioned the SPL meter before because on Ampage most people take what you say at face value and don't show how insecure they are in both their playing ability and technical knowledgethat they have to anonymously say derogatory things concerning both MY judgement and musical ability. Hey Anon, whoever you are, go back to jamming with your Crate amp to your Korn CD in your bedroom in your parents' house and don't bother people who are simply trying to have some fun and learn something in the process. Hallelujah, Holy Shit! Where's the Tylenol? Now, on to a reply with some thought. Bruce, I have had the amp indoors in a controlled climate(heat pump w/ dehumidfier because I live in East TN) environment for the past three years. Do you think that the speaker could have retained moisture after that? (although that sounds much more sane than my spider theory) Where could I get ahold of Weber and does he have any bass speakers BTW? Psycho |
