FJ I have never used Hammond iron for guitar amps but I do know from experience that the NS Deluxe iron you mention is killer. Also a good piece is the NSCO22848. 4K primary to 4 ohm secondary. Use it with a 8 ohm speaker and you have an effective 8K primary to 8 ohm secondary. Sounds great in a 5E3 that I just clip leaded together on the bench today. If you are like me and always changing stuff around; this is a great tranny as it allows you to later build a 35 watt, PP 6L6 or El34 amp for use with a 4 ohm speaker. Michael |

While certainly possible the makers of the Big Muff and low quality tubes are making OK OT's, it's hard to imagine that an OT designed for use in the DR will give the same sound as an original tweed deluxe OT. Might be louder, flatter (response) or better in a number of ways, but hard to imagine the same. Check with Kendrick, Hoffman, Dixie (sound works, not "chicks"), angela and triode if you can. |

Yup! Ted has hit it. The OT you guys are talking about IS NOT an OT for a tweed Deluxe no matter what they try and tell you. I have them ALL... and I mean all. It is a very good PP class AB1 6V6 OT however, and you'll end up with a really nice sounding amp if you do use it. The real tweed Deluxe OT is closer to the impedance of a BF Princeton, but it's easily twice as big as a BF Princeton, plus it's an open frame paper bobbin design with who knows how many interleaved windings. MOJO's tweed Deluxe OT was the closest one I've seen that is not custom wound. G. Weber (Kendrick Amps) was selling one that was pretty darn good too. Maybe better. But, if you want a decent sounding cheap OT for this amp, use a reissue Pro Reverb (TF127.. Pacific Transformer) OT but use it with an 8 ohm speaker (about 8Kohms with 8ohms) and use a bigger power supply tranny (120ma min) to get the two 6V6GTA tubes around 15-16 watts each at idle. The OT will be totally OK with this current. The tubes might get hot but that's the sound. BTW, this tweedy amp design, with a tweedy tone stack, is NOT going to give you that big butt bottom you keep talking about oldman. The tweed tone stacks are notorious for passing quite a bit of midrange with the bottom and that will make you think the bottom is less by comparison. A great sound, but not colon crunching bottom end. BUT, tweedy Ds are still my favorite homebrew amp and it's easy as pie to get it them to RIP!! Bruce |

Sorry Michael. Didn't mean to step on your toes. I didn't notice your comment about the Pro Reverb OT! Nice call. Bruce |

Maybe better.....Bruce , I DID use a "CLARK" tweedy OT (measured @ 7/8" wide at laminations)...lots of BRITE, RAW crunch + the VOL. = cool...BUT fwiw...my 2nd homebrew 5E3 has a OT I removed from an old MOTOROLA record-player!...laminated iron measures 1 1/8" wide!...this sucker (OT) pumps the sh%t!!! |

you can barely see that OT (the one I'm holding)...the 5E3 in the "grape-crate" (bottom-photo), is the CLARK OT... My friend is using that one thru a LEE JACKSON 4X12 & a RAT to record his latest "heavy-metal / hard-rock" CD!!...He liked the grape-crate one better because it was "briter & nastier" sounding...Frank...http://www.blast.net/fjr/Toaster.html |
