In Search of Covering material
Howdy Ya'all

I'm having fits trying to find a source for that naugerhide(sp?) leather looking amp covering. I've found loads of places that carry every type of tolex you can think of. I'd rather not use autmotive upholstery as that seems to be a little too thick.

Anybody know any sources?

I found genuine Naugahyde locally at a shop specializing in upholstery materials. It it quite a bit thicker than tolex (which, btw, I can't find anywhere locally.)

I found Naugahyde at a local upholstery shop called Mae's, which is a chain that is going out of business. It was about $5 a yard, lotsa cool colors too.

I'm a little wary of using upholstery material for amp covering as there's that cloth kind of backing on it. I don't know how well the glue would hold to that stuff. It wasn't really ever meant to be glued down to anything.

Anybody ever use regular upholstery material for amp covering?

I used some of the naugahyde that I found at a fabric store in town. about 6$ a yard I believe.....

It is a bit thicker. I used 3M High strength 90 to put it on, but the main seam at the bottom is starting to come undone. I used staples to hold most of the edges because they were on the inside of the amp.

Stuff looks damn nice, but it isn't real durable to wear, and it is kinda hard to tack on, but it can be done.

I have used cloth-backed vinyl for two home-made cabinets and have had NO problems whatsoever. One of these cabinets is over 8 years old, was glued on with Elmer's white glue (!), and has been roughly treated. Not so much as a single edge has lifted, and the vinyl has held up pretty well - at least as well as some of the tolex-coverd stuff I have had over the years.
