What is the "sweetest" power tube you have heard?
I'm thinking of converting the power tubes in my amp.. its EL34 -- so it probably wont be very hard.. It can take a straight swap with 6l6's but is there a way to convert it to 6v6? -- anyone have a page? info?

design specs (on NOS 6v6's) is max 360 VDC on the plates,

Fender Deluxe's used up to 425 VDC. EL34's i think off

hand can do 500+ VDC .. so at a minimum you'd need to lower

the B+ to tolerable levels for 6V6'ers .. but IMO 6V6's

sound really sweet!

The EI KT90 is the best power tube I've ever heard. They are not made anymore and have gone up in price.

You should be able to just plug in the 6V6's, but as Jeff mentioned here you have to check the B+ voltages. If your B+ is higher than the rated 360v (or the 425v that Fender uses in their DR) you would need to lower the voltage one way or another (add in a power zener or replace the tranny).

P.S. I'm no expert on power tubes, but the Svetlana 6L6's sure sound nice to me... I'd try those first if your voltages are too high to run the 6V6's safely. BTW if you are looking for a "sweet" sound, try an EI 12AX7 for the initial preamp tube.

Sweetest? 7868/7591 I think. EL84 is a close 2nd.

Speed,

I just finished a Tweed Princeton clone using a 7868 and a Hammond 125E. It gives the 6V6 (my favorite tube) a run for its money.
