Fender Bassman 64
I recently was given a Fender Bassman, date is Oct 5th 1964.

I opened it up and looked inside and there doesn't seem to be any obviously burnt sections. I don't see any blackened parts etc.... It hasn't been used in ages so I would suspect that it probably needs to be re-capped.

I checked the fuse and it looks good. It doesn't look burnt out.

Is there anything I should check for before I plug it in?

Should I change the tubes first? etc...??

Any help appreciated...

Thanks,

Aron

As long as everything looks ok, the best thing to do at this point is to plug 'er in and see how it sounds. Be sure to turn all the pots to check for scratchies. Report back to us with what you find. Good luck, this is an awesome amp foe mods!

Re: Fender Bassman 64/CAPS???
I was thinking... Shouldn't I change the caps first? At least in the power supply section???

Anyone have any recommendations for suppliers of replacement caps?

Thanks,

Aron;

Nice friend to give you the 64' bassman!

Mouser is a good source for the PS caps.

www.mouser.com

replacing the PS caps is not a bad idea, you may also want to replace the electro's on the circuit card, too, but I'd give it a listen first to see if it sounds good with out those changed out.

What is this weird 25+25 MF component in there?

Is it really a dual 25uF 25 WVDC electro cap?

never seen those before.

I assume I can replace it with 2 25uF caps.

There are also 2 .25uF 400 volt electros in there.

I worked on one of these for a friend of mine. Great amp--great tone.

The 25uf+25uf is a dual cap, the only thing that is a pain is getting all the leads in the eyelet when replacing it.

The .25uf I believe are from the Bass Channel preamp, you will most likely want to completely rebuild that channel if you want to use it. I wouldn't worry about them.

I would replace them power caps--personally I am a big fan of Sprague electros all around in a amp. The power caps come formed so it isn't a big worry. I've had really good luck with them in 7-8 amp I replaced them in.

That Bassman is real nice to work on--and sound great

enjoy and good luck
