How do I bend this stuff?

How do I bend this stuff? Does anyone out there have any suggestions for cleanly bending 1/8" aluminum? I picked up a nice sheet over the weekend & want to make some chassis without all the cursing that has accompanied my last few attempts - I've had pretty good results with scoring & bending thinner stuff, but the 1/8" always wants to fracture on me. So, any words of wisdom? My ragged, bleeding knuckles thank you in advance. |

You aren't going to like this but, take it to a real metal shop that bends meatal but can build boxes. 1/8" is very hard to bend and extremely hard to bend without stress fractures. Aother option is to cut the sheet into 5 or so pieces, in such a manner that you can have the corners tack, spot or resistance welded. 1/8' will be a snap to weld. I use .080" aluminum for my chassis with all welded corners, but, before welding, I've spotted stress fractures even in .100" stuff. Bruce |

Yeah Dave, Bruce is right but just to add. Make sure the shop has a "pan" brake (or at least that's what they call it in my area)if you're going to have the chassis bent on all sides. A standard brake should work if you're going to weld the sides on. troy |

| Nate S. | Additionally, there are different grades of sheet aluminum, some will always fracture when bent. You need soft stuff, no 6061-T6 here. |

If what you have is the hard stuff, you can try using a torch set with a carburizing flame and heat the areas where the bends will be. this will soften the aluminum enough so that it will be easier to beand and reduce the stress fracturing when it is bent. -Jeremy |
