building an slo--questions
i keep reading posts here about building an slo. i wouldn't mind trying my hand at this, but i need a few questions answered--

1]-where is the schematic you all are using?
2]-where are you getting the trannys, or does everyone use different ones?
3]- which trannys are best and how close will the amp get to the real thing with them?
4]-whats the cost for each tranny?
5]-approximatly how much would the cost be for all parts needed excluding the speaker, cabinet, chassis, and tubes?

i know theres a lot of questions, but whatever you can tell me will be a help.

thanks,-dale

Check out the Blue Guitar site, link off the front page. Probably the latest and greatest--hopefully the guys will update Steve with their revisions.

Think most are using different ones. Look at replacement Marshall trannies as a good choice for both PT or OT's. I believe some even used some Hammond transformers, hopefully somebody will jump in with what model(s) they used, be interested my self just for a reference. Another thing they are looking at and just giddy about are the OEI OT's--available currently only in a 50W version from obsoleteelectronics.com

Probably get pretty close to a original, better yet you could tweak it for personal taste/tubes/trannies what have you. Don't know if there really is a Best.

From Hoffman, looking about $200 bucks for a PT and OT. Another $20 for a choke.

Probably a $150 or less to build up a board--filter caps and everything(depending on what you pickup and where for components). You've pretty much excluded the high buck items.

Guys,
Ive used the Hammond 1650N for the output trannie and it sounds good and the low end does not mush. I am looking at buying the OEI output trannie soon to try as I spoke with Joe L. and he dropped an OEI trannie into his soldano clone.he said it really brings the plexi vibe into the SLO clone. I find that the SLO peamp structure really sings so The OEI would seem to be a good choice. The hammond has a fat tone and can get really loud. Seems even more louder than some other 50 watt amps ive owned. The Hammond 1650N is rated about 60 watts. I think that Jeff S. Will be sending Steve A the corrected schem as Joe and Jeff found an error in the LDR switching supply and they corrected it on the last updated schem. I hope this helps.
Cheers

The other guys have answered the questions as well as I can so I'll just add that any quality transformer should end up with a good sounding amp based on the SLO design. Since the SLO uses proprietary DeYoung transformers, none of us are going to nail the sound but since none of the cloners have actually played one, it's an unknown target. Personally I think that is a good thing. I would rather have a kick ass original sound than a copy of the same amp anyone can buy if they have enough money. But that is just me :)

Of the 4 I have used, I would have to rate the OEI plexi replacement as #1, the Hoffman generic Bassman replacement as #2, the Drake in my JCM800 as #3 tied with my SF Bassman's orginal transformer. But any one of them is much better sounding to me than my Marshall '74 or '77 SuperLeads.

Here is a short clip of #2 with nothing but an SM58 going straight into the sound card here in the living room - http://www.ccxus.net/~jlemoine/rapsamp.mp3

Joe,
Jeff said he has the trannie numbers from the deyoungs used in the SLO amps. I wonder if Deyoung would sell these trannies outright to any one? Have you or Jeff tried to call them. Also The PCB looks great. Where did you get the photo ecth PCB from:)
Cheers

Sean at Soldano said the part numbers are theirs exclusively so I would doubt seriously that DeYoung would sell you one. It ain't gonna happen :)
