High Gain Power tube choice & EL34 triode Hello all, Has anyone used EL34's in a gain amp such as a SLO or dual rectifier? What is the difference between that and the usuall 6L6's? Also, what is the highest B+ that anyone has used on an EL34 in Triode mode? Thanks everyone. Craig |

Craig,I prefer 34's in high gain amps. When pushed hard they soften on the high end, roll off some bottom, and compress in a nice way.The 6L6 will retain more high end, more bite, sparkle, glassiness, whatever you want to call it.Svetlana and Tesla both make excellent 34's,give em a try! Dave K |

Craig, I've tried EL-34's in a few Dual Rec's and an SLO clone... I can say without hesitation, I hate 'em. Whenever my finances let me, I keep a quad of 6550's in any high gain amp. In my opinion, if you've got an already hot preamp signal, the EL-34's breaking up just make the sound muddy and undefined. 6L6's arn't too bad for high gain, in specific the Tesla's or Svet's, but 6550's just help keep the sound focused and solid all the way to full power... That's just my $0.02, hope it helps. -Ryan |

I have EL34's in my Mesa Mark III, and I like them they break up nicely and allow the lead voice to come through rounded, the tubes are branded Mesa Boogie but I am not sure who makes them, being simulclass I can thow in the 6L6's, the only difference being, it's the extra bottom end... |
