I use a Harwin two tier stand-off insulated terminal on one of the tube socket mounting screws. The screw head is on the tube side of the chassis with a solder tag under the nut on the inside of the chassis for the ground connection. I size the screw so that there is ~3/16" of thread protruding through the nut and then screw the stand-off onto that. The grid stopper is soldered between one tier of the stand-off and the tube pin. The core of the screened cable is soldered to the other tier and the screen of the cable to the solder tag. The grid stopper can be changed without disturbing any other connections and you don’t have to drill any holes not that drilling would ever be a problem for Steve hack-n-slash Ahola :)

Well, drill bits do break sometimes... ;)

P.S. So do you have a supplier and stock number for the Harwin two tier stand-off insulated terminals? I can't quite picture them...

Steve,

Try http://www.harwin.com/catalog/pdf/L8.pdf The hexagonal thing in the color pic is the single tier stand-off. The double tier I was describing is order code W2331-00

Thanks for the link! After looking at the pix I figured out that I already have a bag of them... only I didn't know what they were for! :D

Steve,

As for the grid stoppers being soldered right to the tube socket pins, the alternative would be to drill a small hole in the chassis to add a two-lug terminal strip... right?

Well actually in a Marshall the grid resistors run right across the 1K 5W screen r's. A little dabble of Silicone adhesive holds the two together quite nicely.

"Or are you able to mount it under a 4x40 screw securing the tube socket? I ask because some people may not want you to drill even a "teeny little" hole in their BF amp chassis..."

BF chassis? you mean Fender? They are already secured between pins 1 & 5. Unless you're one of those (add adjective & noun here) that want to run EL34's in your Fender... then I'm afraid you're on your own my friend. :)

As for preamp input grids, I too have hung grid resistors off of the socket & heat shrunk over them. A sharp exacto blade makes short work of removing the shrink for rework. A broken lead here would not be likely to do any damage to the amp so it's not as big of a concern to me, plus the shrink tubing adds some strength to the assembly.
