Wicker Cane - Everything you needed to know......
After a futile search for info on the internet for how to use/apply/treat wicker cane, the idea of going to the public library suddenly occurred to me, duh..... Found several books, extracted the info I needed, and after 4 attempts and 2 yards of woven wicker cane ($14 a yard), I have it down. So, for those of you seeking that victorian/rockingchair/boogie look, here is what you need to know.

Wicker cane needs to be soaked in warm water for at least an hour before you use it. This makes it pliable and prevents it from cracking when you pull it around corners to fasten it.

I wrapped it around a 6 x 17 inch 1/2 thick piece of high quality veneered plywood that I painted flat black. I attached one long side, then pulled slightly and stapled it down on the other side, making sure it was even across the face. It does not have to be extremely tight when you fasten it wet, just snug. When it dries, it will shrink and form nice and tight around what ever you are fastening it too.

After it was thoroughly dried, I stained it with Minwax Golden Oak stain. When that was dry, I gave it a light spray coat of semi-gloss polyurethane.
This will be the grill on my AC-30 head, and accents the mahogony cabinet quite nicely. Pictures to follow soon.

Patrick,

I came to the same conclusion about a year ago. I built a 5F6A clone in a Walnut cabinet and wanted te cane look grille. The folks I got my cane from (Country Seat) knew nothing about amps but told me the same thing about soaking it first and that works great. Most of the other "DIY" cane grilles,I've seen, sagged and looked terrible. I stained mine with a 50/50 mixture of Bullseye amber shellac and denatured alcohol. I might try the Minwax next time, thanks for the tip.

No J, It is simply a signature thing, all of my original cabinets have a heart someplace, but you could put a fan there. My registerd logo is a heart, with a lightning bolt in the center. (as shown on the front of the SB12 head)
I did "craft" carpentry for a gift shop chain for awhile a few years ago, and most of my pieces had a heart somplace.:)
