What clone the best to build?
I've built marshall clones and fender clones and even a Soldano clone. I guess the question is what do many consider to be the best over all versitile amp to build? I see lots of threads on the dumble clones but I have never heard a dumble unless it was on a recording. To me the Soldano is a nice hi gain amp but I miss having a great clean sound as I get in my Fender twin reverb. I want a amp to build that has a great clean sound and a very sweet distortion channel that has a sweet singing distortion that isnt metal sounding but warm with lotsa harmonic content and sustain. Lets hear those comments from you non metal players that have built some of these different clones out there. .......Thanks

Mitch,
I've built dozens of clones of all types, and I can honestly say that IMHO no one amp can do it all. That said, I think you've probably already hit upon the closest thing to what you're after with the Soldano clone.....maybe you could try tweaking it a bit to see if you can make it work better for you. For me.......each amp design has it's strong points and weak points. My favourite amp is based on the Bassman/Marshall circuit......after many years of fine tuning I've made this amp about as versatile as I need it to be.....of course it's not perfect, but I just leave it all the way up and when I want sweet, clean tones, I pick softly..when I want grind, I attack the strings harder. I'm too lazy to roll the volume control up and down or to switch channels, so I just kept tweaking 'till I got the amp as dynamic as I possibly could. This approach wont work for some people, but it makes my life very simple and to me this is the ultimate in versatility.

Hi!

I'd say something.Build two amps in a single head.A kind of twin copy, with a normal fender preamp, then build the power section of a deluxe, add an another preamp to your taste.,and then with a litle switching, you're done, four amps in one.If you want the deluxe distortion, use the pre of the twin, and the pow of the deluxe.Well the clean is easy. But with a poist pi relay switch, you could have an another preamp pi,like a tweed bassman for example.

How do you like the idea?

Best regards.

Your Crazy!!!!:)

Working on a buddies amp right now, a 76' Traynor Twin copy. Was just going to goose the normal channel into the Express type preamp. But he gave me the "GO" to do whatever I want. After looking thru the amp that was the answer I was looking for. Anyway, here's what's turning out:

Clean Channel: Humble type Clean channel with the TSD Boost. This channel will have reverb, thought about ditching it and build a complete clone-would have included the proposed dirty channel.

Dirty Channel: Express preamp slamming into the

PI/Output: Blackface PI into a quad of EL-34's

hoping for the best.

I have schematics for a 18watt Hiwatt clone (or should I say a LOwatt *grin*) http://members.dencity.com/rebel420/hwclone.jpg

Hey Reb, what PT you thinking for it? what B+ range are you considering?
i've been kicking around the idea of a hiwatt or in your case a lowatt sounds like a great amp.
(just have to finish the 2 current projects)
