dumb guy needs help with pots
I am trying to build a pedal that needs a 100k trim pot on the board. I think I got the wrong ones. The ones I got were the mini-pots (313-1000-100k) from Mouser. Did I get the wrong ones, if I did, can you tell me which ones I need. Many thanks!!

Trimpots come in a staggering amount of different guises: thick black "coins" with a white core that rotates, a contraption with disks and sliders all exposed and naked, rectangular plastic blocks with a tiny screw sticking out... They all have one thing in common though. They're designed for a set-and-forget application. So there's no shaft (well, usually...) as there is on a regular pot, and they're meant to be pcb-mounted. These need adjusting mostly by screwdriver.
Mini-pots as I understand it (didn't verify the Mouser number, sorry) are baby versions of the real full size pots. Look alike, have (thinner) shafts, nuts and washers etc. These are fine to use in stead of a trimpot (as are all pots) but theyre a heck of a lot more expensive. You might want to save them for another project, and save some internal space (though I have met a few that were less rugged and durable than their grown-up cousins).

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. I think I have a good understanding now. I even have a part number from Mouser for the correct trimpots. So much to learn when starting out. It hurts my brain sometimes.....Thanks again!
