Smallstone with vibrato-switch Hi there! I'm considering building a Smallstone, but I might want to add a "univibeish" vibrato-switch (that is, if I've got this right, a switch to select only the phase-shifted signal instead of the mixing with the original? Correct me if I'm wrong..) I've found a layout on JD's site, and it would be nice to use it, but I suspect some changes has to be made maybe? Well, my question is, has anybody else done, thought of or wanted to do this? Any info appreciated. Thanks in advance, Magnus |

Yes, if you select only the phase shifted signal, not mixed with the "dry" signal, you get vibrato. I don't know about JD's layout, haven't looked. |

What I did was to take the color switch and separate the slow phase from the swishy phase with two 1M pots. By doing so I actually made a depth knob and a swell knob. Now I could control a huge range of phases and dial them in so I'm not stuck with the Sovtek swish and the gentle roll. I was going for the "vibrato" effect when I did the operation but instead I became pleasantly surprised. It's actually much better than the original sound design!! The best thing about it was that I got rid of that big, ugly, clunky switch made for Russian jet fighters!! Now if I could only get rid of that nasty ticking from the clock chip...... When you correctly figure out how to do the vibrato thing e-mail me and let me in on the secret. Toddy |

Or just go read how to do it at GEO. | |

Thanks R.G. I feel this big (my thumb and for finger are nearly touching.)!! I should have read your post before I posted that. I got a little excited when someone talked about something that I can actually contribute some information and got carried away. Going with tail between my legs. Toddy |

Hey! That chunky switch is cool! Toddy, I love the big chunky switch the Sovtek Small Stone's have. It's heavy enough you can switch it with your foot without hurting it. I've jumped up and down on a Sovtek SS without so much as putting a ding in it. I like turning the speed knob with my foot too... you get some very Radiohead-ish type effects. It may be ugly, but I think it's very useful. Speaking of big ugly Sovtek switches... does anyone know where you can get those crazy military industrial looking footswitches Sovtek used to use on their Small Stone and Big Muff? Those switches rule, they make the Carling's look really wimpy, and they've proven to be quite reliable. I like big switches. Martin |

My Sovtek BMP's switch isn't terribly reliable. About a year after I got it, it started not engaging the effect when I pushed the switch down all the way and it went CHUNK. I had to switch it off then on again to get it to work. Its never been stomped on either, just pushed on by my foot or my hand. And to the guy who didn't like the color switch, REPLACE THE CAPS. Instead of just being treble-bass-treble-bass swooshing it swooshes between the original signal and some crazy 70's synth Dream Weaver phasing. Toss a delay pedal after it and it is CRAZY. |
