Green Ringer
Is the green ringer a decent effect? I play in a band and I'm trying to expand into new sounds. It looks fairly easy for a beginner like myself.

It's a subtle effect. It can give you anything from clangorous sounds - almost like a steel drum kind of vibe to octave up if you roll your treble down. If you play 2 notes at once, you will get the most effect.

I'm just wondering if it will expand my sound. I'm constantly looking for new ways. Some have said it's a crappy pedal. I'm assuming it's a pedal that boosts the higher frequencies of a signal. Correct?

While there is probably some sense of more treble, it gets that way because the Green Ringer is an octave-up generator, not principally a treble booster. So, no, it's not a treble booster.

It is not a crappy pedal. It's one of my favorites and if it means anything some of the green ringer is used by NIN. I lent it to one of their sound designers before.

Cool because as it seems, It will probably be my first crack at this whole DIY this. It sounds like the sound I'm looking for; not necessarily a treble booster, but I want something to bring out the higher harmonics of my guitar. Does it produce a lot of distortion, or is it a clean effect? I heard a sound sample, but all the people who post samples play it in a metal/hard rock style whereas I play more jazz, Jam-band type music.

Alex,

You don't have to play metal to enjoy a Green Ringer. Jeff Beck used a RM sort of sound to produce some very tasty non-metal stuff..."Goodbye Pork Pie Hat"...now that's some JAZZ...great chord changes...extremely challenging to improvise a good sounding solo over those changes! It is an effect that you have to work with quite a bit to squeeze the good stuff out of it. I've found that right hand position and picking technique make a huge impact on this thing. IMHO, a lot of people who say it's junk, never really gave it a good chance.
