Bulk Purchases
I wonder if it's possible at some point to organize some sort of bulk purchases for some of the more expensive stuff we use. Things like enclosures, pots etc...??

The interesting thing is that paypal.com makes something like this possible.

Perhaps it might go like this:

People interested "load" the paypal account with money to a trusted buyer.

The buyer goes and orders the large quantity and gets the lower price.

People interested send SASE or whatever is necessary to get the stuff shipped back to them. The key is that the buyer only needs to put the stuff in the box and ship it out.

Everyone involved benefits.....

Of course, it would have to be enough to get a price break either on the purchase or shipping.

Hi Aron,

This is a great idea, and I'm interested. Problem is, I'm in Belgium (of all places :-) and shipping to Belgium would cost more than keeping the whole operation in the States...

Also, paypal only works in the states...
to bad :-(

Anyway, I have been comparing prices and I have found a really cheap local electronics store, way cheaper than anything like mouser or mcm etc...but they don't have very much in stock and don't really know anything.
They once tried to sell me a blowtorch when I asked for a soldering iron :-)

Peter.

The bulk purchase idea is a good one.

I'd be interested in 3PDT switches like
the Fujisoku 8Y3011.

The Ampage Co-op is trying to do something like this, but there isn't very much luck in getting off the ground from what I can tell. One problem to begin with is that there don't seem to be enough people interested in putting down the cash to buy into a bulk purchase. Another concern is that there are people who think that the orderer (or facilitator or whatever you want to call the person who puts in the order and ships out the goods) should not charge anything above the cost of the parts plus shipping, even though there is a significant amount of time and work that goes into the sorting and packaging of the components (not to mention broken/miscounted items). I think this is a fabulous idea and I am all for it, but these issues should be worked out before any attempt is made at getting this off the ground.

fujisoku 8Y3011
fujisoku does not offer much price drop for quantity purchases. can purchase this piece in 100 quantity for 6.10 each from chris electronics in saint paul, mn, 6.45 at 10 pieces, 6.90 for 1. they have 55 in stock today. sales guy would be bob. chris electronics, 651.631.2647

what is a fujisoku switch? it has a metal plunger, 9 mm dia, stroke is 3.5 mm, height of plunger is about 9 mm above the threads... noticably smaller than a carling, probably what mike fuller used for a while, and prescription. wow, they make a 4pdt too, 8Y4011. chris electronics has 11 of them. what the heck to do with that other pole? oh, i know. you could short both the input and output from the board to ground, to reduce noises and eliminate oscillation while the unit is bypassed. or you could manipulate an lfo so that it started at the same part of the wave every time you turned on the pedal, or in the case of a sequenced device, started at one. of course, you could do those last two with a 3pdt if you were sneaky. borrow the hot wire or ground wire activating the led on that third pole to do some extra duty with the spare contact. i sure do wish carling made a 3pdt version of their stomp switch.

Woo Hoo-oo!

Since I first saw this switch in early Fulltones,
Way Huge, and recently in Barber Electronics stuff,
I've liked it, wanted it, but couldn't easily
find it.

$6.45/10 with shipping isn't bad at all compared
to the Carling DPDT's from Sovtek (~$9 ea).

Thanks, Dr. Vex.

Re: Ideas on Bulk buys
Guys,

As I'm just starting to get back into building effects again, I've gone through most of the parts I need, tallied them up then checked a few places in Australia for where to get the best deal on bulk parts. So when I'm making an effect, I look at what parts I need, check the spreadsheet against what I need and order those parts in bulk (Eg. if I need only a couple caps of the same value for the project, then I'll order enough to get the bulk discount, like 10 or maybe 50 depending on how many I'll need in the future). If I'll only ever need 1, then I'll go to the closest store when I'm there next, no use purchasing 10 if I only need 1.

It works pretty well with most of the electronics stores in Australia like Jaycar, Dick Smith. I only buy parts I can't get from there at RS components and caps as RC are very cheap for polyester caps.

Yes it might cost a bit of money initially, however if you're going to be building these anyway, you save money in the long run.

It really seems the most expensive items are the box and switches.
As for boxes, I think I might have a brain wave, anyone ever made a home metal bending machine?? I don't think it would cost a hell of a lot. All you'd need would be some flat steel bar, weld a couple of hinges between them, add a handle and use a couple of clamps to hold another piece of flat steel on top of the piece you're bending. Instant bending machine. Flat galvanised sheets of metal would make tonnes of boxes (use can also get fairly heavy gauge sheets as well). Okay, maybe not as sturdy as diecast boxes, but a hell of a lot less expensive (especially if you're making a lot of boxes).
