Little Smokey Amps Does anyone konw how these things work and what the internal circuitry looks like? Thanks a lot. Charlie |

Yeah...those little things are cool. It totally blew me away when I plugged it into a 4x12 cab and it could drive it! Anyhow...my newer one (one of the plastic case ones) has the following: (1) Audio amp chip (NJM-386D, check Mouser) (2) 16V 47uF caps That's all there is to it! w/ open loop gain on the audio amp, that gives about 200x gain! (if memory serves me correctly). If you are thinking about making one...don't bother. I highly doubt you'd save any money, and they only cost 20 bux. Much more trouble than it is worth. Besides, Bruce Zinky deserves your money for coming up w/ such a great idea. Lorren |

| zgrav | It is easy enough to make the circuit for experimenting, but the speaker used will have a great impact on the resulting sound. For day to day use, I think the Smokey is easily worth the investment for its sound and rugged compact design (especially when you get one free with a 12 pack of guitar strings....) |

They use the 386 IC? Do you perhaps havea schematic or something? About how loud is a gain of 200? Thanks a bunch, Charlie |

Yes, it uses the 386 IC. Look at the spec sheet on this IC and you've basically got your schematic, plus all the useful mod information you might need. Its already been said, but the speaker is what makes it. JD |
